AC/DC Zürich

Kay has wanted to see AC/DC for a long time, so I kept myself on the ticketcorner mailing list to try and snatch some tickets up whenever they decided to come back. Unfortunately though, within 10 minutes of sales, the tickets were sold out and already being re-listed on ricardo.ch for 1500chf a piece or more. Even when they released tickets for a second weekend show, those also sold out within ten minutes. Infuriating!

Kay found some tickets being sold through work at a ridiculous amount, double the list price, but he decided to splurge for them because he doesn’t really spend money on himself aside from traveling and I agreed that he deserves a treat. The person selling them tried to push the price even further up, but Kay made it clear that he would not buy them for more than double. That’s just cra-zy. (Yeah, it was already a crazy price…)

Soo…. how did we like it?

Well, we had what at first appeared to be awesome seats to the stage. But as you can tell from the photo, we are right at the edge of a staircase that happened to lead down to the pit.

That banister down to the left was actually a little off-way from the stairs and people would stand there, or on the stairs in front of us and take photos during the WHOLE show. Now, at first you wouldn’t think it’s so annoying, but keep in mind that:

A: We paid for seats and this is Switzerland, if you pay for a seat, you sit

B: If you try to stand in your seat, you WILL be yelled at by the people behind you and by security who were shooing the people away in front of us all during the concert

C: There were like 50,000 people coming up and down those stairs during the whole concert. As soon as one person left or was made to leave, another would come.

It got really, really annoying.

At first, I tried being nice and just tapping on people to get them to leave, but as the concert went on, I was more and more angry about not being able to see anything and people got drunker and drunker.

Would you believe that most of the people stopping who refused to move on were men? They all felt like it was their damn right to stop on that staircase without paying for a seated ticket and just enjoy the show from there, in front of our seats, while we had a nice view of their asses.

You might wonder, why didn’t we just stand up? Well… I mentioned the people sitting behind us who were quite angry as well. Plus there were security guards making the people leave from time to time. They just weren’t fast enough to stop the troves of concert goers at all times.

Aside from that, which parts of the show we did see were awesome. But it was really hard to concentrate. I became a very angry woman who was shouting at a lot of people in German by the end of the night. Some of them gave me some attitude and for once, I just did not care. I yelled at those men to go away, sit down, get out of my face because I paid for a ticket to SEE the show!

Only at the very end of the show did everyone around us stand up, and then we could stand without having the guards tell us to sit down or the people behind us try to murder us. But man, between that and the fumes of cigarette smoke wafting up from the rows below us for the entire concert, I don’t think I ever want to see another concert in Letzigrund ever again. It’s pretty horrible for non-smokers.

But yeah, been there, done that. AC/DC, down in the books. And if you were wondering, yes, seeing Angus Young deliver a guitar solo worthy of the likes of Spinal Tap was a once in a lifetime experience and I am not sure that the younger generation will get to experience such fine solos like that in the future. It was something unforgettable!

I’ve finally done it!

Saturday was a big day.  I left the house alone, ventured into Oerlikon by myself and braved my gym visit(s). I was very, very anxious. Branching out out into new areas of life auf Deutsch terrifies the shy girl in me.

The first gym was full of men that I didn’t feel comfortable working out around and offered little in terms of service to its clients, but the second gym was everything I hoped it would be and after a little hesitation I bought a three-year membership on the spot!

It is a bit of a splurge for me to spend so much money on a gym compared to prices in the US, but I really feel like it is the kick in the pants I need to get working out.

Both yesterday and today I have successfully gotten up an extra twenty minutes early, left the house before my usual alarm clock and arrived at the gym by 6:45am. I can change into my workout clothes and work out for around 55 minutes before showering and arriving at work 30 minutes later than normal.

I am still testing how early I should get up, how long my workouts should be, and how much time I need to shower and catch the train to work. I can actually arrive at work as late as 9:00am

Lazy Katie

Well, to be honest readers, I almost feel like I am avoiding blogging because I am ashamed that I still have not done anything about my gym situation.

Many of you suggested the smart solution of working out at home, but our flat is just too small for me to find space to lock myself away and with all our new furniture, there’s not a lot of room to do anything anyway.

But I’ve finally gotten off my lazy, lazy non-phoning pants and set up an appointment to go see Fitnessplus this weekend. I wanted them to tell me the prices of their membership on the phone and the lady just didn’t want to do that. Sooo I’m sucking up my shy feelings and going to go see the place in real life.

Now I just need to check out Easy fit and Kieser and maybe I’ll make some progress! In the mean time, I’ve got some house updates I’ll be posting soon, I promise. 🙂

Zürich Gyms Part II

I did some more sleuthing and decided to compile a list of some more gyms not mentioned in part one. This is partly because I would like this list to be a bit helpful to people looking for gyms around here in the future if they happen to find these posts.

Here are some more options for those looking for a gym in the Zürich Oerlikon area:

Easyfit

Easy Fit

Annual Membership:  499CHF ($552)
Opening Hours:
Weekdays: 6:00 – 22:00
Weekends: 9:00 – 18:00
Locations: Oerlikon

This place is dead cheap! It’s a bit far from the station in Oerlikon, but it has amazing hours and for the price, I am strongly considering it. I just wonder if the hike from the station (it’s about 15 min) would add too much in the morning, because that’d be 30 minutes dedicated to walking to and from the gym in the AM, plus my normal 40 min commute somewhere in there.

West Side Fitness

Annual Membership:  990CHF ($1095) including a 4 week time stop
Opening Hours:
Weekdays: 6:00 – 23:30
Weekends: 9:00 – 21:00
Locations: Zürich Hardbrücke

This is the earliest open place I have found at Hardbrücke, which is still a good option on the way to work. It is also about the closest thing you will get to a 24 hour gym in Zürich. It’s fairly pricey, but it’s actually the same price as a year with Kieser, which is the gym I am slightly leaning towards from the last post.

Fitnessplus

Annual Membership:
1Y: 1370CHF ($1540)
2Y: 2370CHF ($1332 per year)
3Y: 3459CHF ($1298 per year)
Opening Hours:
Weekdays: 6:30 – 22:00
Weekends: 8:00 – 19:30
Locations: Zürich Oerlikon

Originally I  wrote this place off because they didn’t have one in Oerlikon, but now they are taking over the old TC Training Center, which I also didn’t know about. The only bad thing is that they don’t list prices online and I have no idea if they are affordable or not. (Edit: They refused to tell me prices on the phone because they wanted to convince me to come in person for a tour, so I finally found out the prices this weekend and have added them.)

The opening times are good, but I would be annoyed to visit the place only to find out that they cost too much money and they haven’t returned my email inquiries about prices. I’m pretty sure it’s partially because I always leave a fake number because I don’t want them to call me, but I’m not giving my number out to a gym I’m not even sure I want to join. Nope.

Halle 41

Annual Membership:  890CHF ($986)
Opening Hours:
Weekdays: 6:30-21:30
Weekends: 9:00 -18:00
Locations: Zürich Kloten

This place is close to the airport, but not even at the airport. If you worked or lived near there, that would be useful, but for me it sounds like this place is in the middle of nowhere.

Nord Fit

Annual Membership:  1000-1200CHF ($1108-1329)
Opening Hours:
Weekdays: 7:00-22:00
Weekends: 9:00 -19:00
Locations: Zürich Oerlikon

I forgot about this option. Kay was here last year but he left this gym because it’s very expensive and he likes Kieser better. You can get a cheaper membership if you just go during the day, but that would cut out night time training, which I guess I would need on days I cannot go in the morning.

Swiss Training

Annual Membership:  560CHF ($619)
Opening Hours:
Weekdays: 10:00-22:00
Saturday: 10:00-17:00
Sunday: 10:00-14:00
Locations: Zürich Oerlikon

This place is also super cheap and it’s half as close to the station in Oerlikon as Easy Fit, but the hours are not the greatest. The 10am start means I could only go in the evening, which is really limiting, so I probably wouldn’t choose this place.

Galmarini Elite Training

Annual Membership:  ???
Opening Hours: ???
Locations: Zürich Oerlikon

No information available really and from the website, I get the idea that this is not a place for me. Maybe professional, male athletes or body building-types.

With the addition of Nordfit, I have listed all of the mainstream big-box gyms around Zürich. There are a few more large, albeit very expensive ones in the city centre itself and anyone willing to scour through Google can find some of the smaller local gyms in their specific area.

I will say that it’s worth doing a thorough check to find the best price. I think I plan on visiting Kieser, Easy Fit and Fitnessplus around Oerlikon to see which gym would suit me best in terms of equipment, location, cost and courses available.

Zürich Gyms

I have been faffing about looking for a gym for several years now. After some back trouble following our move and evaluating my horrible posture sitting in a desk at work all day, I thought I should start taking fitness more seriously.

The truth is, I am terribly out of shape. I may be on the low end of the BMI scale, but I have no muscle mass, my flexibility is awful and my endurance is pitiful.

I have many excuses why I should not join a gym. There are none in the town I work in, so going during lunch like Kay isn’t an option. I’m worried that going in the morning is impossible and going after work will ruin my already pitiful social life. I like life right now.

I’m worried that if I gain more muscles I will start eating more and it will increase my grocery bill. Or I’ll lose weight and have to buy new clothes. I’m worried that whenever we move and have kids or whatever happens, I’ll just stop exercising and it will all have been for nothing… except a drain on my bank account.

If I start going to a gym, I’ll have to organize showering, changing clothes, and doing my hair and makeup before work outside the home. I’ll also have to organize how to keep my pack lunches cold because I normally just stick them in my purse for the ride to work. I’d have to organize a gym bag and shoes and workout clothes.

That sounds like a lot of BS. But I realize that I do need to start taking my health more seriously and that I am too much of a wimp to run every day or swim, especially when the weather is awful so much of the year. If am I going to commit to exercising regularly, I’m positive that I need access to a gym or it won’t happen.

TMLSS: I’m lazy and gyms are expensive. Here are my options:

Migros Fitness Park

Annual Membership:  1200CHF ($1341)
Opening Hours:
Weekdays: 8:00 – 22:00
Weekends: 9:00 – 20:00
Locations: Zürich city center, old town

None of the Fitness parks are in very convenient locations to public transportation. They are in good spots if you would live by them, but for people coming through Zürich they would be difficult to walk or take a tram to quickly. The best part about them is that they are open so late on the weekend. 24H gyms do not exist in this country.

Activ Fitness

Annual Membership:
1Y – 740CHF ($827)
2Y – 1280CHF ($1430 or $715 a year)
Opening Hours:
MWF: 09.00 – 22.00
TR:  6.30 – 22.00
Weekends and Holidays: 09.00 – 18.00
Locations: Zürich Central, Tiefenbrunnen and from Jan 31, Oerlikon

Activ fitness would be an all right option, but they are only open early two days a week. 9:00am is a bit too late to go to in the morning, even for locations that are closer to my workplace. I mean… I have to be at work at 9:00!

The central location is not that convenient for me in Zürich because it is not quick to get to from the main train stations. Really, every minute counts in the morning and a 5 minute walk vs a 15 minute walk is a huge difference, especially if it is a raining. Walking through the busiest part of the city with trams, buses, cars and people on the roads among the elements does not make the gym sound more attractive…

But Active is opening a new gym in Oerlikon at the end of this month. Shame is just that it is also going to have the same hours as the other gyms.

Intercity Card: Migros Fitness Park and Activ together

Annual Membership:  1420CHF ($1587)
Opening Hours:
MWF: 8:00 – 22:00
TR:  6.30 – 22.00
Weekends and Holidays: 9:00 – 20:00
Locations: Zürich Central, Tiefenbrunnen and from Jan 31, Oerlikon

The intercity card offers many gyms in the price of one, but the only ones around Zürich are Migros and Activ, so it’s like having a combined offer for those gyms. It’s such an expensive card though and it doesn’t really help you out on the early morning timings, so for me, it’s not worth the crazy price.

Kieser Training

Annual Membership:
1Y – 990CHF ($1106)
2Y – 1690CHF ($1889 or $945 a year)
2Y – 2290CHF ($2560 or $853 a year)
Opening Hours:
Weekdays: 6.30 – 21.00
Weekends and Holidays: 09.00 – 18.00
Locations: Zürich Enge, Hardbrücke, Oerlikon

Kieser is pricey but they have great hours and good locations. The gym is open early enough that I could go at either location before work easily. It maybe closes a little early, but I honestly don’t think you would catch me staying at the gym until 10pm during the week and the weekend hours are decent.

I’m not sure if it is worth signing on for a 3 year membership to get the lower price though. That is a huge commitment!

Silhouette

Annual Membership:  699CHF ($781) plus a one time registration fee of 59CHF ($66)
Opening Hours: (depending on location)
Weekdays: 06:30 – 22:00
Weekends: 9:00 – 18:00
Locations: Zürich Bellevue, Wipkingen, Langstrasse, Badenerstrasse

I believe annual fee for Silhouette is usually around 1000CHF. They are having a special right now for an 899CHF introductory membership, but I can get a discount through Kay to have a membership for 699CHF. I’m strongly considering it because it is a great price compared to the others, but I am hesitating a little.

The Bellevue location has great hours, but the Wipkingen location is only open 9:00am – 9:30pm.  It doesn’t make a huge difference, but it’s nice to have options since Wipkingen is a bit more convenient to get to from home than Bellevue.

Update Fitness

Annual Membership:  690CHF ($771)
Opening Hours:
Weekdays:  08.00 – 9:30pm
Saturday: 09.00 – 17.00
Sundays and holidays: 09.00 – 14.00
Locations: None in Zürich

Yes, I know it’s not in Zürich, but this gym is so cheap! It also has a handy “stop card” for 90CHF that lets you pause your membership while you are away on holidays, which could be handy for people who want to switch to running and swimming outdoors in the summertime.

However it’s not really in the direction of work and it’s not open early enough to go to before work, so it’s out of the running. The weekend hours, especially Sunday, kind of stink though. It closes at 14:00? I would always be stressed to get up and get ready to go before it closed.

Exersuisse

Annual Membership:
1Y – 1040CHF ($1162)
2Y – 1750CHF ($1956 or $978 a year)
3Y 2250CHF ($2515 or $838 a year)
Opening Hours:
Weekdays: 07:00–22:00
Weekends: 09:00–18:00
Locations: Zürich downtown, Zürich Oerlikon

The Zürich downtown location is sort of close to the main train station, but would probably be a time hog to walk and from in the morning on the way to work. The Oerlikon location is closer to the train station, but it opens slightly too late for me to go for an hour, shower and then get to work on time. It is also a bit too expensive for my taste.

I think Exersuisse is a gym I might have joined in Luzern if I worked there longer because it would have been convenient to have access to the Exersuisse locations outside of the Zürich region. For people commuting longer distances, it is worth looking up gyms with widespread locations included in the membership package. Not all gyms are cross-cantonal and not all gyms include membership access in the different cities.

My problem in deciding which gym to go to is that I cannot decide where it should be in relation to work and home.

If the gym could be close enough to work that I could go there during lunch, that would be perfect. But a gym like this does not exist, so if the gym is close to work, but not home… I would probably never go on the weekends.

I am guessing that it would probably work best to go to a gym that is closer to home so that I have the weekend option, but if the gym does not open up early enough then I cannot go before work, which also cuts down on how often I can go and for how long.

I thought of joining one vaguely close to work, but it was over $1500 a year, which I thought was a bit excessive since I still wouldn’t be able to go at lunchtime with the distance.

With all the options, I keep procrastinating on choosing!

How much do gyms in your area cost?
