Finding Glass Tupperware in Switzerland

When I purged gluten from our kitchen, I had to give away all of our plastic tupperware. I planned to replace it with glass to be healthier and to make reheating food at work more convenient since I normally transfer my food to a bowl before microwaving. It took me about 8 months to finally settle on a few sets with some prices that I can stomach here. (Spoiler alert, it’s still a lot more expensive than anything available in the US.)

Without Amazon or Target, it’s sometimes hard to find quality kitchen items for a reasonable price here. You can get a lot of things from Migros or Coop, but often the quality or choice is lacking. There were hardly any glass containers like Pyrex available or they were very expensive or mostly round-shaped. I even searched in Globus and Manor and didn’t really find anything suitable. Honestly, I just wanted something like a Pyrex value set below, but Pyrex Europe does not offer sets, especially at these prices.

($29.99 from World Kitchen. I cannot express what a fantastic deal this set would be here!)

We do all of our cooking on weekends and then I portion half the food into lunch containers and the rest into bigger family-style containers to keep at home, so I was looking for a mix of big and small containers, with more small ones for transporting food to work. Moreover, I also wanted containers that fit well in my cooler lunch bag because they need to stay cool during the two hours I’m at the gym and traveling to work. Ideally, I wanted to be able to pack four containers or two containers and yogurt/fruit as I can now.

Even though I found (and bought) one kind of large Pyrex dish with a lid from Migros since de-glutening the kitchen, I resigned myself to the idea that finding a whole set would be difficult here. I began searching for Pyrex alternatives because there was no way I would pay 20-45CHF per container and the smallest Pyrex available was anyway not small enough to fit well in my lunch bag.

(59.95CHF from Pro Idee)

Lock&Lock is a fairly big brand here and I was very interested in their individual products from Globus. I thought maybe if I found a set online that it would not be quite so expensive as the one off pieces. Nobody wants to pay 15-40CHF for one container, but 60 for a set of five was starting to sound like a good deal

I would have gone ahead and gotten the Lock&Lock set, but the three smallest containers were all square, which is not as space-friendly to my cooler as rectangles would be, so I didn’t stop my search there. After finding Lock&Lock on Toppreise, I was able to do searches for “Boroseal”, “Borosilicat”, “Frischhaltedosen glas” and similar to find several more brands, sets and value options available in Switzerland.

Emsa was a brand I had never heard of, but they popped up in my searches with several affordable sets.

(37.90CHF from Erwin Müller)

After I found the Emsa sets, I somehow found this Silit set. We have a Silit knife from my MIL that’s awesome, so I know the brand is good.

(59.90 from Erwin Müller)

This set from Birgitte St. Gallen looked like one of the most affordable, but it was still square and the site needed a minimum order of 50CHF, which would mean ordering two sets. Plus shipping was a little more expensive than the Erwin Müller site.

(39.90 from Birgitte St. Gallen)

Likewise, this set from Weltbild was also relatively cheap but the sizes were actually a little too big for my needs compared to the Silit containers. Apparently I really had a specific size in mind for my lunch containers! (39.95CHF from Weltbild.ch)

Lastly, I heard that IKEA has some offers for cheap containers and they do, but unfortunately the smallest size (sizes are not accurate in the picture!) was square and the smallest rectangle container was also too big.

(Individually, 2.95-7.95CHF from IKEA)

I really like Lock&Lock as a brand, but I didn’t want to buy all the rectangle pieces individually and I was having a really hard time deciding which sizes I needed. It’s hard to tell from pictures online and I kept using a ruler to approximate how big or small things were. I wanted to make sure we would be investing in smart size since this would cost us way more than plastic containers.

At the same time, I was also lamenting the fact that QVC Germany offers some awesome lime or purple Lock&Lock sets that would totally go in our kitchen, but they only ship to Germany. Rats! Likewise, all those cheap US options don’t ship here.

Having gotten really fed up with searching, I finally made the decision to order the two Emsa sets above as well as two Silit sets for about 190CHF with shipping. That would give us 12 containers in addition to our glass Pyrex and the few bell jars that we have.

Did I save money? I think I still did. 190CHF works out to 15.8 a container, which is generally how much the small to midsize rectangle Lock&Lock cost from Globus. Also… bonus: with their black lids and red silicon, the Silit containers should be fairly stain-proof against tomato sauce and curry! I think that’s worth paying a little extra for…

Not only am I happy that we will be storing most if not all of our food in glass going forward, I am very happy that we are no longer strapped for containers! I had bought just the bare minimum to get by with plastic and we were always running out and sometimes had to stick whole pots of food or pans in the fridge. So happy I’m back to my usual storage container setup!

Also happy how many small containers I have! I figure if I still want some more, I should try the IKEA ones out since they are such a good price, but I’m looking forward to next summer when I can just heat these up and stick them in my bag to head to the lake.

I might have been able to find an Amazon business that ships to Switzerland, but I would have had to deal with exorbitant shipping fees and import taxes, so I’m happy to just have my containers sorted out locally.

Have you converted to glass storage containers yet?

The Terrace Garden

I didn’t do a big gardening plan this spring because we had a three week holiday planned in April/May and I didn’t want to have things starting up right as I was leaving for a few weeks, so we were a bit slow.

Below you can see my herb garden for now, which I feel looks sad and lonely on our balcony. We still have so much space but not many containers and Kay is picky about what we use as a container. Thrifty eco, used containers are just not very Swiss. Sigh.

On the left we have our bamboo which is finally growing some this year. In the left big trough we have a rose bush, some flower seeds and some summer squash that I really wanted to try this year. In the pots I have raspberries, tomatoes, basil (green and red variants!), parsley and cilantro from seed because you cannot buy the plants here.

On the other side of the balcony is our lounge set and more bamboo behind and in the trough on the right we have clematis, lavender and some climbing roses which are new. On the ground to the right we have mint, chives and sage.

Back by the house I have some pots with flowers and one with oregano and thyme, although the thyme is already almost dead. I’m not sure if it’s unhappy because of the mulch or too much sun earlier or too much water. Who knows! I hope it makes a comeback.

I had some tips from some bees about how to prune my tomatoes. I never knew what to do with them. I feel like such a garden noobie, but I’m trying to do better every year when I learn things!

I took the cuttings from these plants and planted the suckers in other pots to try and propagate them – something else I’ve never tried before now!

Summer squash is coming in strong now, although I need to research what I should be doing for it.

The red basil is awesome! I’m happy it’s doing well for now. A friend told me a secret recipe for pesticide by infusing peppers and water and spraying on the basil often.

Cilantro. So excited not to have to pay 2CHF a bunch for some for tacos and Tex Mex!

The sage is a little sad here so I’m taking it out from the open area to cover it under the balcony so it gets less rain. I will water it a bit less too and see how it does.

The clematis flowers all dropped off after I planted them, but I really hope they do a lot of growing next year. The neighbors have it on the other side of the fence and it just seems like theirs just took off.

The lavender is liking the sunny area so far.

Here are my little tomato cuttings. I also had some bigger ones that were older and they seem to be doing better than these, but I’m still keeping an eye on these. It would be great to have more tomato plants for free! 🙂

Have you learned some helpful gardening tips this year?

Guest Bath Storage

For the longest time our guest bathroom has felt like the most clinical, cold space in the entire flat. It has white walls, white tiles in the shower area and dark tiles on the floor.

I always felt like it just looks empty, so finally we picked up a VITTSJÖ shelf for 69.95CHF from IKEA to fill the space a bit and to have a place to store our towels outside the pantry.

This was right when we bought the shelf. Since we haven’t gotten our wardrobes built yet, I later stored all our extra sheets in here as well as all of the towels from the pantry. I cleared out enough room in the pantry that I can put my sewing machines in there instead of under my desk in the office.

This room still looks reaaaallly empty to me. Even worse on photos. Especially this corner below which is your view from the throne. I kind of don’t want to paint in this room, but I want to put some color in here because it’s screaming for it.

I would like to put a big, cushy square rug in front of the shower door over there to walk out onto and maybe a nice big picture on that wall. I actually am planning on putting up art or photos at some point.

I tried to convince Kay to go for the taller white FJÄLKINGE shelf offered at IKEA for 119CHF, but he thought it looked like crappy quality and he assured me that he will be responsible for cleaning the glass shelves of the shelf we bought. Hah.

But it’s probably a good thing we went with the cheaper, darker shelf. It contrasts more with the walls and stands out a bit better even though it’s also colorless.

How do you think I should add color in this room without committing to painting?

Making room for Karl

As I mentioned, Karl was actually delivered very quickly, back in December when I ordered him. Kay started putting him together while I was gone one evening so that he would be ready in time for our Christmas party.

Of course I wanted to put the long end of the couch opposite from how Kay built it and after he finished it, he agreed… so he switched and and here is our setup since December. Don’t mind the balcony furniture piled up for the winter outside!

Sure, we could have matched more the size of the leather couch in relation to Karl’s long side, but we set it up like this because Karl seems to encroach on the TV less this way.

It is not a perfect seating setup, but it does provide a lot of seating room and some space for snacks and drinks to share.

I love the cozy nook in the corner. It is my favourite place to curl up with our two old pillows and my mothers comfy afghan.

When I have more time and money, I play on getting a ton of pillows for Karl and making funky pillow covers in bright colors like green, purple, yellow or teal to tie into the color scheme. We’re also thinking about a rug for the sofa area at some point.

Our space lamp arches over into the area and we’ve settled it above the table since Kay stood up into the lamp and broke the new philips hue bulb. (So expensive!) We have not replaced the bulb yet, so none of the LEDs diffuse anymore and it makes for odd color bands cast around the area.

Above you can see at this angle how if we put the long end of the sofa on the wall next to the TV it would be coming just a tad too close. I also thought it made more sense to have the wider part of Karl facing the TV where you would be viewing a movie.

So that’s our lounge area these days. It definitely sort of separates the lounge area from the dining area. I’ll have to see how it works in practice entertaining. It’s a whole lot of sofa!

How much seating have you got in your living room?

Light Freakout

Do you remember way back when, when I finished painting our purple wall? Not a lot else was happening in our living room and it looked kind of really sad. I knew the little lonely light bulb had a lot to do with it, but the light we wanted was very expensive in Switzerland.

What a difference a few months made!

Before we got our sideboard, I mentioned which lights we were interested in buying. In mid-November I actually went on the Swiss Philips site to look up some information for a blog post when I realized that the Instyle 5-bulb hanging lamp was NOT THERE. Cue freakout!!

Kay and I spent months trying to agree on lights and this was one of the two lights I knew we wanted to buy. I did not want to start this search all over, so I began scouring the European philips sites to try and find an online provider in the UK or Germany who would sell us the lamp.

As you can see, I happened to luck out and find our lamp for a super price! It seemed like it was going on deep discount in preparation for discontinuing in Germany, so I got it for around 400CHF instead of 1000CHF. Score!

We ordered the 4-spot light for the kitchen as well since it was also a good price and I didn’t want it to slip away either and before our Christmas party, Kay installed both lights with a little help from his favorite assistant. It was my job to pick up screws off the floor that he dropped and to help him make sure the lights were centered.

We both enjoy this lamp a lot, but I find it really funny that it doesn’t make the whole room super bright, as this is usually one of Kay’s arguments for spots vs other lights. But he likes how the light kind of clusters over the table and makes the table very bright, but everything else around is dark.

It makes for a great mood for a dinner party, but it is still fairly “dark” overall in the living room, so we picked up the two little lights you can see on the sideboard and put some Philips Hue bulbs in there so we can play with colors against the white wall there.

The cables of the Instyle light are still a bit wrinkly from shipping and the glasses covering the bulbs are not scratch free, but I can’t complain I guess. I’m fine with it and I think the wires will straighten out in time.

Yes, I’m a little bit obsessed too.

It feels great having a proper light over the dining room table and guests at the Christmas party commented how this is another non-IKEA purchase that gives the flat a bit more personality. They definitely noticed it was a high-quality light and not a light bulb on wire anymore!

I really do need to polish/windex the glass covers though. Looking  a little grimy below.

Here you can see more how the light clusters on the table. People sitting across from you are properly bright, but beyond them the light falls into darkness. It’s pretty cool.

I promise I’ll take some pictures of the kitchen lighting at some point for an update. At this point, we have no more loose bulbs hanging around and everything is at least fitted with a temporary fixture. This is a success in my book!

Have you ever had some drama with a product that was being discontinued right as you planned to purchase it?
